1965 - Beatles for Sale was booted from the No. 1 spot on UK’s Record Retailer chart by Rolling Stones II.

1965 - The Righteous Brothers scored a No. 1 hit with their tune, “You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feeling.”

1982 - Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock & Roll” debuted on the US Hot 100 at No. 63.

1987 - Sonny Bono announced his candidacy for mayor of Palm Springs, California.

1990 - Billy Idol broke his arm in a motorcycle crash. The sneering singer allegedly ran a stop sign in Hollywood, on his way back from the recording studio. Idol was working on his album, Charmed Life

1994 - Nirvana’s final tour of Europe began.

1998 - Carl Wilson, a founding member of the Beach Boys, died at the age of 51 after battling lung cancer.

1998 - Falco, the 80s technopop artist who gave us “Rock Me Amadeus,” died at the age of 40 in a traffic accident in the Dominican Republic.
